ACCESS is an organization that is designed to give Resident Assistants the opportunity to advocate for civility, change, equality, safety, and social justice issues regarding topics such as race, gender, differing abilities, religion, LGBTQ, and socioeconomic status.
Each month ACCESS has a meeting and a program. At September’s meeting focused on socioeconomic status and planned a life size game of LIFE program, and throughout the month they had boxes in every residence hall and collected school supplies for Hattiesburg Public Schools. The LIFE program was a success with 36 students there and ACCESS donated 101 school supply items to the Hattiesburg Public School District.
This month they are focusing on differing abilities. They will have a speaker from the USM Office of Disability Accommodations and will have different opportunities for students to experience throughout the program such as completing tasks while in a wheel chair, blind folded, wearing sound proof headphones, etc. They have also contact The Arc Southeast Mississippi in Hattiesburg to donate their time there.
We are excited for the future of ACCESS!
